"I'm a poor, drunken orphan with nowhere to go but the grave," wailed a waifish
and non-plussed Mr. Chris Funk as he lay supine by the railroad tracks. The
crate of records he had been cradling in his nubile appendages now lay in pieces
on the ashen ground, his complete collected recordings of sixties psychedelic
luminary Rick "Paisley Dave" Rigmore scattered hit her and yon like so many dead
leaves beneath a diseased elm. Noting his neglect to accredit this phrase to its
rightful owner, chief engineer Jenny Conlee, her accordion neatly strapped to
her back, stepped lightly from the caboose and corrected his negligence with the
aplomb only an immigrant Hungarian could muster: "Dylan Thomas, sir! Please move
along!" But it was too late: an indelible bond had been soldered in that moment
of recognition. A few hours later, in a Turkish bath, they revealed their
stories to one another between sips of a strange, tangerine liqueur. Not far
from that spot, however, two young military dignitaries (John Moen, Nate Query),
appropriately lathered, overheard our two heroes' stories. Was it chance, then,
that lead the four unsuspecting bathers to seek to return their soiled
undergarments at the same kiosk where worked the poor, bespectacled Colin Meloy?
One can surmise all one wants, but the truth should be known that, after
adopting the moniker The Decemberists, these five wan vagabonds began playing
their peculiarly styled pop music in various concert-halls and brothels all
across the globe.

"We're making pop music the way it should be made," lead singer and
songwriter Pat Kearns says casually as he returns to the board to mix
"Siouxsie Please Come Home", the premier track off Serenades and Hand
Grenades, the brand new 12 song LP from Blue Skies For Black Hearts. Release
is scheduled for May 20, 2008.

This, the band's fourth full-length release, began with mudding sheetrock,
painting walls and hanging baffles, turning the back rooms of local guitar
shop, Centaur Guitar, into PermaPress Recordings, a modern-day Brill Building
and Kearns' new studio. The paint on the walls had barely begun to dry when
Kearns, bassist Kelly Simmons, lead guitarist Michael Lewis and drummer Paul
Noel began clocking in nightly, working up arrangements to songs that Kearns
had often written earlier the same day. Within two hours of a song's
introduction, it was hashed out, rehearsed and basic tracked.

With the advent of digital, today's artists frequently pile their computers
with hundreds of tracks and takes, hoping time, reflection and deft editing
will produce a masterpiece. Blue Skies, while embracing the functional
advantages of modern recording technology, self imposed many of the
limitations that fueled the creativity of rock and roll for the last half
century. Decisions were made on the spot, focused primarily on feel and
melody. Instruments were recorded live with ambiance and real plate reverb
instead of relying on digital plug-ins later. Harmonies were worked out
around the piano, moments before the entire band gathered around a single,
tube microphone to sing the takes together. Nothing was ever added to tracks
that needed to be "worked out later in the mix" - a common method of the
digital generation. From the first time this record spins, you will feel the
same intimacy and attraction that fans have longed for since the Brits
invaded America (both times), Stiff Records scoured the pubs for talent and
Creation Records saved rock and roll.

That album opener, "Siouxsie Please Come Home," is a contemporary love story
that could only occur in the new millennium. Through melody and words, Kearns
paints a picture of a lovelorn composer whose girl has been sent off to war
while he remains at home, writing heartbroken love songs while surrounded by
her boxed possessions.

"Ambition" weighs integrity against success, an age old question that has
become particularly complex and poignant in today's music industry. It
features a horn arrangement reminiscent of those heard on the great southern
soul recordings of the 60s and '70s, while also belying the band's obvious
adoration of Costello and even Badfinger.

"Someday There Will Be Better Days" is an optimistic look at the frivolity of
divorce, taking a dark, comedic view on exes waging war through their
lawyers, and featuring a full-blown string arrangement that would make even
Phil Spector turn green.

Û±ÛÛ ÛÛ±Û
Û°Û± In late 2003, just two years after 9/11, The OaKs's ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Ryan Costello sold everything he owned, joined a ±Û°Û
Û°Û± humanitarian organization and moved to Afghanistan. ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Costello lived there for two years, working in the ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Central Afghan mountains with returned refugees, ±Û°Û
Û°Û± teaching them creative agricultural techniques and ±Û°Û
Û°Û± becoming fluent in their native language, Farsi. ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Late at night, while the dust storms blocked out ±Û°Û
Û°Û± the stars and rattled the windows, he would sit and ±Û°Û
Û°Û± work out impressions of what he had seen and heard ±Û°Û
Û°Û± that day on his acoustic guitar. ±Û°Û
Û°Û± ±Û°Û
Û°Û± After returning to the United States, Costello ±Û°Û
Û°Û± joined back up with his long-time creative and ±Û°Û
Û°Û± song-writing partner Matthew Antolick, who was ±Û°Û
Û°Û± drumming full-time in a Moroccan band. Antolick and ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Costello began working out Costello's melodic ideas ±Û°Û
Û°Û± and lyrical concepts, home-recording in Antolick's ±Û°Û
Û°Û± apartment what eventually became Our Fathers and ±Û°Û
Û°Û± the Things They Left Behind. Exploring themes of ±Û°Û
Û°Û± self-sacrifice and introspection over roots-folk ±Û°Û
Û°Û± and jazzy melodic layers, Our Fathers... was an ±Û°Û
Û°Û± original breath of fresh air for independent music. ±Û°Û
Û°Û± ±Û°Û
Û°Û± The release of Our Fathers... drew immediate ±Û°Û
Û°Û± attention to The OaKs in Orlando's press and music ±Û°Û
Û°Û± scene, and the attention quickly went national as ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Paste magazine featured Costello and The OaKs in ±Û°Û
Û°Û± their July 2007 cover story "Can Rock Save the ±Û°Û
Û°Û± World." The OaKs also partnered with Global Hope ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Network on the release of Our Fathers...and agreed ±Û°Û
Û°Û± to donate 50% of the profits from each CD or track ±Û°Û
Û°Û± download from that album to aid widows and ±Û°Û
Û°Û± recently-returned refugees from Afghanistan. ±Û°Û
Û°Û± ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Costello and Antolick immediately realized the ±Û°Û
Û°Û± difficulty of translating their multi-tracked ±Û°Û
Û°Û± compositions into a live setting with just a duo, ±Û°Û
Û°Û± and began working to put together a band of diverse ±Û°Û
Û°Û± musicians who could make the compositions come to ±Û°Û
Û°Û± life on stage. They were joined by Jeremy Siegel, a ±Û°Û
Û°Û± classically trained bassist steeped in Led Zeppelin ±Û°Û
Û°Û± and Bootsy Collins riffs, and also fluent in ±Û°Û
Û°Û± classical and jazz trombone. Tim Cocking came next ±Û°Û
Û°Û± - a piano major and audio engineer who's as ±Û°Û
Û°Û± dexterous on his trumpet as he is on his keyboard ±Û°Û
Û°Û± and accordion, and Greg Willson, a seminary student ±Û°Û
Û°Û± wielding a mandolin and electric guitar and who ±Û°Û
Û°Û± played the breathiest Stan Getz-style saxophone ±Û°Û
Û°Û± they had ever heard. Their lineup was completed ±Û°Û
Û°Û± shortly thereafter by Melissa Reyes, a ±Û°Û
Û°Û± singer-songwriter whose alto voice and folk ±Û°Û
Û°Û± harmonies complemented perfectly with Costello's ±Û°Û
Û°Û± high vibrato. From the first guitar riff at their ±Û°Û
Û°Û± debut show on stage at the 2006 Anti-Pop Music ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Festival, it was apparent that they were meant to ±Û°Û
Û°Û± be making music together – the energy in the room ±Û°Û
Û°Û± was electric, and the reviews were raving. ±Û°Û
Û°Û± ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Out of this natural chemistry was born many new ±Û°Û
Û°Û± songs over the winter of 2006/2007. Inspired by the ±Û°Û
Û°Û± unique talents of each member, Costello and ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Antolick began writing songs that would showcase ±Û°Û
Û°Û± the bands rhythmic tightness and diverse ±Û°Û
Û°Û± instrumentation. Lyrically, Costello delved into ±Û°Û
Û°Û± themes of spirituality in the midst of brokenness, ±Û°Û
Û°Û± of longing and searching, and continued to explore ±Û°Û
Û°Û± the previous album's themes of social justice and ±Û°Û
Û°Û± self-sacrifice. The OaKs honed these tracks in the ±Û°Û
Û°Û± living room of Costello's wood-floored 1950's style ±Û°Û
Û°Û± house, and at live shows across the state, until ±Û°Û
Û°Û± the musical complexity and rhythmic tightness of ±Û°Û
Û°Û± the music exceeded anything they had created ±Û°Û
Û°Û± before. ±Û°Û
Û°Û± ±Û°Û
Û°Û± In late July of 2007, Costello put in for part-time ±Û°Û
Û°Û± employment at his social work job and the OaKs ±Û°Û
Û°Û± began recording Songs For Waiting. Using the warm, ±Û°Û
Û°Û± full sound of Costello's old house, they determined ±Û°Û
Û°Û± to use no artificial reverb on the new album, ±Û°Û
Û°Û± instead using room mic'ing techniques to mix the ±Û°Û
Û°Û± elements together in the style of their favorite ±Û°Û
Û°Û± 1960's jazz and rock albums. Even synthesizers were ±Û°Û
Û°Û± played through amplifiers and speakers and run into ±Û°Û
Û°Û± the room to give them the woody ambience of ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Costello's house. Over the next few months The OaKs ±Û°Û
Û°Û± employed trumpet, trombone, sax, Hammond organ, ±Û°Û
Û°Û± bells, synths from the 70's and 80's, acoustic and ±Û°Û
Û°Û± classical guitars, electric and acoustic bass, a ±Û°Û
Û°Û± plethora of shakers, tambourines, and hand-drums, ±Û°Û
Û°Û± and a Wurlitzer electric piano from 1959. ±Û°Û
Û°Û± ±Û°Û
Û°Û± In mid October Antolick, Costello, and keyboardist ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Tim Cocking began mixing the new album. Using as ±Û°Û
Û°Û± few modern mixing tricks as possible, including no ±Û°Û
Û°Û± artificial reverb or delay, they carefully arranged ±Û°Û
Û°Û± each song. Throughout the mixing process they were ±Û°Û
Û°Û± mentored and guided by Alan Douches of West West ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Side Music, who's hand has been on great recordings ±Û°Û
Û°Û± from Paul Simon's Graceland to Grizzly Bear's ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Yellow House and Sufjan Steven's Illinois. ±Û°Û
Û°Û± ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Finally, after over four long months, the OaKs' ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Songs For Waiting was finished on November 8, 2007. ±Û°Û
Û°Û± The new album is scheduled for release on March 4, ±Û°Û
Û°Û± 2008. ±Û°Û

Dropkick is a Scottish band who play catchy, countrified pop music with great
harmonies and melodies that will stick in your head forever. Imagine Buddy Holly
playing "duelling banjos" with Paul McCartney and you're halfway there… They
were formed at school in a small town in Angus in 1995 by drummer/singer Andrew
Taylor, guitarist Alastair Taylor (brothers) and bassist Ian Grier. At this time
the band played original punk-pop songs but over the years, Dropkick's sound has
gradually evolved from its punky origins into a much more mature alt-country
style, yet without losing any of the punchy simplicity and immediacy of the
songs.
