"I'm a poor, drunken orphan with nowhere to go but the grave," wailed a waifish
and non-plussed Mr. Chris Funk as he lay supine by the railroad tracks. The
crate of records he had been cradling in his nubile appendages now lay in pieces
on the ashen ground, his complete collected recordings of sixties psychedelic
luminary Rick "Paisley Dave" Rigmore scattered hit her and yon like so many dead
leaves beneath a diseased elm. Noting his neglect to accredit this phrase to its
rightful owner, chief engineer Jenny Conlee, her accordion neatly strapped to
her back, stepped lightly from the caboose and corrected his negligence with the
aplomb only an immigrant Hungarian could muster: "Dylan Thomas, sir! Please move
along!" But it was too late: an indelible bond had been soldered in that moment
of recognition. A few hours later, in a Turkish bath, they revealed their
stories to one another between sips of a strange, tangerine liqueur. Not far
from that spot, however, two young military dignitaries (John Moen, Nate Query),
appropriately lathered, overheard our two heroes' stories. Was it chance, then,
that lead the four unsuspecting bathers to seek to return their soiled
undergarments at the same kiosk where worked the poor, bespectacled Colin Meloy?
One can surmise all one wants, but the truth should be known that, after
adopting the moniker The Decemberists, these five wan vagabonds began playing
their peculiarly styled pop music in various concert-halls and brothels all
across the globe.

"We're making pop music the way it should be made," lead singer and
songwriter Pat Kearns says casually as he returns to the board to mix
"Siouxsie Please Come Home", the premier track off Serenades and Hand
Grenades, the brand new 12 song LP from Blue Skies For Black Hearts. Release
is scheduled for May 20, 2008.

This, the band's fourth full-length release, began with mudding sheetrock,
painting walls and hanging baffles, turning the back rooms of local guitar
shop, Centaur Guitar, into PermaPress Recordings, a modern-day Brill Building
and Kearns' new studio. The paint on the walls had barely begun to dry when
Kearns, bassist Kelly Simmons, lead guitarist Michael Lewis and drummer Paul
Noel began clocking in nightly, working up arrangements to songs that Kearns
had often written earlier the same day. Within two hours of a song's
introduction, it was hashed out, rehearsed and basic tracked.

With the advent of digital, today's artists frequently pile their computers
with hundreds of tracks and takes, hoping time, reflection and deft editing
will produce a masterpiece. Blue Skies, while embracing the functional
advantages of modern recording technology, self imposed many of the
limitations that fueled the creativity of rock and roll for the last half
century. Decisions were made on the spot, focused primarily on feel and
melody. Instruments were recorded live with ambiance and real plate reverb
instead of relying on digital plug-ins later. Harmonies were worked out
around the piano, moments before the entire band gathered around a single,
tube microphone to sing the takes together. Nothing was ever added to tracks
that needed to be "worked out later in the mix" - a common method of the
digital generation. From the first time this record spins, you will feel the
same intimacy and attraction that fans have longed for since the Brits
invaded America (both times), Stiff Records scoured the pubs for talent and
Creation Records saved rock and roll.

That album opener, "Siouxsie Please Come Home," is a contemporary love story
that could only occur in the new millennium. Through melody and words, Kearns
paints a picture of a lovelorn composer whose girl has been sent off to war
while he remains at home, writing heartbroken love songs while surrounded by
her boxed possessions.

"Ambition" weighs integrity against success, an age old question that has
become particularly complex and poignant in today's music industry. It
features a horn arrangement reminiscent of those heard on the great southern
soul recordings of the 60s and '70s, while also belying the band's obvious
adoration of Costello and even Badfinger.

"Someday There Will Be Better Days" is an optimistic look at the frivolity of
divorce, taking a dark, comedic view on exes waging war through their
lawyers, and featuring a full-blown string arrangement that would make even
Phil Spector turn green.

Û±ÛÛ ÛÛ±Û
Û°Û± In late 2003, just two years after 9/11, The OaKs's ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Ryan Costello sold everything he owned, joined a ±Û°Û
Û°Û± humanitarian organization and moved to Afghanistan. ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Costello lived there for two years, working in the ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Central Afghan mountains with returned refugees, ±Û°Û
Û°Û± teaching them creative agricultural techniques and ±Û°Û
Û°Û± becoming fluent in their native language, Farsi. ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Late at night, while the dust storms blocked out ±Û°Û
Û°Û± the stars and rattled the windows, he would sit and ±Û°Û
Û°Û± work out impressions of what he had seen and heard ±Û°Û
Û°Û± that day on his acoustic guitar. ±Û°Û
Û°Û± ±Û°Û
Û°Û± After returning to the United States, Costello ±Û°Û
Û°Û± joined back up with his long-time creative and ±Û°Û
Û°Û± song-writing partner Matthew Antolick, who was ±Û°Û
Û°Û± drumming full-time in a Moroccan band. Antolick and ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Costello began working out Costello's melodic ideas ±Û°Û
Û°Û± and lyrical concepts, home-recording in Antolick's ±Û°Û
Û°Û± apartment what eventually became Our Fathers and ±Û°Û
Û°Û± the Things They Left Behind. Exploring themes of ±Û°Û
Û°Û± self-sacrifice and introspection over roots-folk ±Û°Û
Û°Û± and jazzy melodic layers, Our Fathers... was an ±Û°Û
Û°Û± original breath of fresh air for independent music. ±Û°Û
Û°Û± ±Û°Û
Û°Û± The release of Our Fathers... drew immediate ±Û°Û
Û°Û± attention to The OaKs in Orlando's press and music ±Û°Û
Û°Û± scene, and the attention quickly went national as ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Paste magazine featured Costello and The OaKs in ±Û°Û
Û°Û± their July 2007 cover story "Can Rock Save the ±Û°Û
Û°Û± World." The OaKs also partnered with Global Hope ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Network on the release of Our Fathers...and agreed ±Û°Û
Û°Û± to donate 50% of the profits from each CD or track ±Û°Û
Û°Û± download from that album to aid widows and ±Û°Û
Û°Û± recently-returned refugees from Afghanistan. ±Û°Û
Û°Û± ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Costello and Antolick immediately realized the ±Û°Û
Û°Û± difficulty of translating their multi-tracked ±Û°Û
Û°Û± compositions into a live setting with just a duo, ±Û°Û
Û°Û± and began working to put together a band of diverse ±Û°Û
Û°Û± musicians who could make the compositions come to ±Û°Û
Û°Û± life on stage. They were joined by Jeremy Siegel, a ±Û°Û
Û°Û± classically trained bassist steeped in Led Zeppelin ±Û°Û
Û°Û± and Bootsy Collins riffs, and also fluent in ±Û°Û
Û°Û± classical and jazz trombone. Tim Cocking came next ±Û°Û
Û°Û± - a piano major and audio engineer who's as ±Û°Û
Û°Û± dexterous on his trumpet as he is on his keyboard ±Û°Û
Û°Û± and accordion, and Greg Willson, a seminary student ±Û°Û
Û°Û± wielding a mandolin and electric guitar and who ±Û°Û
Û°Û± played the breathiest Stan Getz-style saxophone ±Û°Û
Û°Û± they had ever heard. Their lineup was completed ±Û°Û
Û°Û± shortly thereafter by Melissa Reyes, a ±Û°Û
Û°Û± singer-songwriter whose alto voice and folk ±Û°Û
Û°Û± harmonies complemented perfectly with Costello's ±Û°Û
Û°Û± high vibrato. From the first guitar riff at their ±Û°Û
Û°Û± debut show on stage at the 2006 Anti-Pop Music ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Festival, it was apparent that they were meant to ±Û°Û
Û°Û± be making music together – the energy in the room ±Û°Û
Û°Û± was electric, and the reviews were raving. ±Û°Û
Û°Û± ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Out of this natural chemistry was born many new ±Û°Û
Û°Û± songs over the winter of 2006/2007. Inspired by the ±Û°Û
Û°Û± unique talents of each member, Costello and ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Antolick began writing songs that would showcase ±Û°Û
Û°Û± the bands rhythmic tightness and diverse ±Û°Û
Û°Û± instrumentation. Lyrically, Costello delved into ±Û°Û
Û°Û± themes of spirituality in the midst of brokenness, ±Û°Û
Û°Û± of longing and searching, and continued to explore ±Û°Û
Û°Û± the previous album's themes of social justice and ±Û°Û
Û°Û± self-sacrifice. The OaKs honed these tracks in the ±Û°Û
Û°Û± living room of Costello's wood-floored 1950's style ±Û°Û
Û°Û± house, and at live shows across the state, until ±Û°Û
Û°Û± the musical complexity and rhythmic tightness of ±Û°Û
Û°Û± the music exceeded anything they had created ±Û°Û
Û°Û± before. ±Û°Û
Û°Û± ±Û°Û
Û°Û± In late July of 2007, Costello put in for part-time ±Û°Û
Û°Û± employment at his social work job and the OaKs ±Û°Û
Û°Û± began recording Songs For Waiting. Using the warm, ±Û°Û
Û°Û± full sound of Costello's old house, they determined ±Û°Û
Û°Û± to use no artificial reverb on the new album, ±Û°Û
Û°Û± instead using room mic'ing techniques to mix the ±Û°Û
Û°Û± elements together in the style of their favorite ±Û°Û
Û°Û± 1960's jazz and rock albums. Even synthesizers were ±Û°Û
Û°Û± played through amplifiers and speakers and run into ±Û°Û
Û°Û± the room to give them the woody ambience of ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Costello's house. Over the next few months The OaKs ±Û°Û
Û°Û± employed trumpet, trombone, sax, Hammond organ, ±Û°Û
Û°Û± bells, synths from the 70's and 80's, acoustic and ±Û°Û
Û°Û± classical guitars, electric and acoustic bass, a ±Û°Û
Û°Û± plethora of shakers, tambourines, and hand-drums, ±Û°Û
Û°Û± and a Wurlitzer electric piano from 1959. ±Û°Û
Û°Û± ±Û°Û
Û°Û± In mid October Antolick, Costello, and keyboardist ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Tim Cocking began mixing the new album. Using as ±Û°Û
Û°Û± few modern mixing tricks as possible, including no ±Û°Û
Û°Û± artificial reverb or delay, they carefully arranged ±Û°Û
Û°Û± each song. Throughout the mixing process they were ±Û°Û
Û°Û± mentored and guided by Alan Douches of West West ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Side Music, who's hand has been on great recordings ±Û°Û
Û°Û± from Paul Simon's Graceland to Grizzly Bear's ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Yellow House and Sufjan Steven's Illinois. ±Û°Û
Û°Û± ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Finally, after over four long months, the OaKs' ±Û°Û
Û°Û± Songs For Waiting was finished on November 8, 2007. ±Û°Û
Û°Û± The new album is scheduled for release on March 4, ±Û°Û
Û°Û± 2008. ±Û°Û

Dropkick is a Scottish band who play catchy, countrified pop music with great
harmonies and melodies that will stick in your head forever. Imagine Buddy Holly
playing "duelling banjos" with Paul McCartney and you're halfway there… They
were formed at school in a small town in Angus in 1995 by drummer/singer Andrew
Taylor, guitarist Alastair Taylor (brothers) and bassist Ian Grier. At this time
the band played original punk-pop songs but over the years, Dropkick's sound has
gradually evolved from its punky origins into a much more mature alt-country
style, yet without losing any of the punchy simplicity and immediacy of the

Original CD Rip

This is the most amazing pop album by one of the best pop artists to come into the music scene. The follow up to her smash debut is riveting, fun, exciting, romantic, and much more. Starting off with the funk Martika's Kitches the album starts off with a bang and does not stop. Next is Spirit-the best track on the album written by Prince. It is so engaging and build and builds to a climatic ending that will leave you breathless. Other fantastic dance tracks include the sultry Don't Say U Love Me and Temptation. The ballads are also worth taking a listen too. Martika shines on the gorgeous Take Me to Forever and the stunning Safe in the Arms of Love. Other noteworthy tracks are Pride and Prejudice and the sweet and enjoyable Coloured Kisses. Martika is a true talent that has not gotten the recognition she deserved. A must for pop music fans. Even if you have not heard any of these songs before you should still have it in your collection. Also included Love... Thy Will Be Done! , the gospel tinged ballad co written by Prince.

The cover art will make an entire generation of kids who spent late nights
hoping to get a peek at something naughty through a scrambled cable signal get
all misty-eyed. But that might be the most nostalgic thing about Bring on the
Comets, the third album by the Kentucky-based trio VHS or Beta. The group that
once took its primary inspiration from dance-pop heroes, ranging from Duran
Duran to Daft Punk, has toughened its sound and shifted focus from slinky beats
to sullen melodies on tracks like "Can't Believe a Single Word," "The Stars
Where We Came From," and the high-strung "Time Stands Still." While album
highlight "Burn It All Down" proves the group can still knock out a dizzying
club jam, this release is mostly a testament to its newfound ease around wailing
guitars, live drums, and bearded members of My Morning Jacket. We all have to
grow up sometime.

Review
by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
- All Music Guide

It goes without saying that a music movie lives or dies by its music, but it's particularly true
with pop music parodies. If the music doesn't hit the right notes -- if it doesn't feel like the
period it's meant to evoke, if the humor is either too broad or dry -- the movie crumbles around it,
to say nothing of the soundtrack, which will be hard-pressed to stand on its own as an album. The
gold standard for rock comedies is This Is Spinal Tap, as the music felt authentic, and Christopher
Guest, Harry Shearer, and Michael McKean proved that lightning could strike twice with their folk
music saga A Mighty Wind.

The soundtrack to the John C. Reilly-starring Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story belongs in such
rarefied company. Like Spinal Tap, Walk Hard sets the bar high by attempting to create many sounds
from the past, but where the Tap pretty much confined themselves to a bit of Merseybeat and
psychedelia before settling into a metallic groove, the whole point of Walk Hard is to trace
Reilly's Cox character -- based chiefly on Johnny Cash -- through the ins and outs of the '50s,
'60s, and '70s, so there are more sounds here and thereby more pitfalls, all of which the
music-makers miraculously manage to avoid. This is especially remarkable because the 15 songs on
Walk Hard evoke many different artists: there is naturally Johnny Cash on the title track, the
mariachi-flared "Guilty as Charged," and the cheerfully vulgar Johnny and June take-off "Let's
Duet," but there are also two takes on Elvis ("[Mama] You Got to Love Your Negro Man," "[I Hate You]
Big Daddy"), three on Dylan, Roy Orbison on the grandly melodramatic "A Life Without You (Is No Life
at All)," and the Everly Brothers-styled "Darling," but this also leaves old-time rock & roll behind
with the Beach Boys psych-pop pastiche "Black Sheep" and, bizarrely, a disco spin on David Bowie's
"Starman."

That's a lot of ground to cover, but the songs work as music while still being funny. Sometimes,
the jokes are big and obvious -- the double entendres on "Let's Duet" are hardly subtle -- but
sometimes the humor is a bit sly, as on "Royal Jelly," which nails Dylan's stream-of-conscious
romantic writing. Of course, that song wouldn't work if it weren't for John C. Reilly's delivery; he
mimics the particulars of Dylan's cadence with the grace of Cate Blanchett, and his fine ear for
detail is evident throughout this soundtrack, as he negotiates the twists and turns of the music
with ease. Such a performance would be admirable if the songs weren't good, but since they're very
fine, his singing helps turn Walk Hard into that rarest of things: a parody album that's almost as
addictive as the real deal.

Taking the name from the Screamin' Jay Hawkins song "Big Yellow Coat, my
favorite bonelazy rock band (mostly John Darnielle himself as a band) this time
write excellent thirteen songs which almost make me to jumb and shout 'Hell
Yes'. It's a future classic, an underground treasure... Think of unique
impression Cocteau Twins' Treasure Record, now Heretic Pride is like country
version of that dream pop music. I tried to play them together, the result comes
like a miracle. This record must be my new favorite record. The disc was
produced by John Vanderslice and Scott Solter at Prairie Sun Studio, i didn't
surprise to it, because record sounds so amazing and so good. He's an indie god
but noone explores his records.

John Darnielle appears with his the agriest vocal contribution on some of the
songs; Heretic Pride, In The Craters On The Moon, Lovecraft In Brooklyn and So
Desprate. Lyrics are also essential like previous the Mountain Goats, mature,
ironic, bright... you'll notice after playing my picks below.

Emotional classics like R.E.M.'s Automatic for the People, Coctea Twins'
Treasure or Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, this record
"Heretic Pride" provides timeless music. A must have! Believe to your own ears.
The record's out on the 19th February.

New York, San Francisco and beyondv Notable indie trailblazer/punk luminary/folk
singer/rock songwriter/guitarist/comedian/performance artist/busiest man in show
biz Jonah Matranga is set to release his first proper (solo÷ album, And on
September 18.

The record, co-produced by Ian Love, noted for his recent work with Earl
Greyhound, will be released on Philadelphia/NYC outpost, Limekiln Records.
Matranga says, (I met the Limekiln guys through Ian, and he just kept saying how
nice and straightforward they¦d been with him. Nice and straightforward are two
of my favorite words, and I trust Ian, so that was that. They seem to be my
perfect combination of small and inspired, pragmatic and creative, serious and
fun.÷

Limekiln¦s co-founder, Steve Reed adds, (We¦re really excited to be working with
Jonah. His dedication to his art is exactly what we love and is a perfect fit
with the other artists at Limekiln Records.÷

Sessions wrapped at Love¦s Brooklyn studio this spring to brilliant result. When
asked about the new stuff, Jonah says, (It¦ll make perfect sense to anyone who¦s
been listening over the years, but it may confound the folks who had me in one
little box or another.÷

The prolific songsmith known as much for his solo work as for his much-loved
group situations like Far, Onelinedrawing, New End Original and Gratitude most
recently released The Three Sketchys 1999-2005 on his own OLD Records.
Essentially, the record was a collection of classic homespun EPs and rarities
following up Matranga¦s acclaimed 2006 release There¦s A Lot In Here (A DVD&CD
By Jonah Matranga), another brilliant collection of songs and images existing in
2 sides and chronicling a bare-bones recording of one of Matranga¦s famous
living room concerts (he is one of the only artists of his ilk that does them);
and a (Rock Club Side÷ that kicks off as a solo show at the Chain Reaction club
in Anaheim, CA, but then sees Matranga usher in various Onelinedrawing
collaborators for a few rousing tunes. Says Matranga, (It¦s been good to revisit
this stuff over the last couple of years, and now it¦s time for something new.÷

Punk rock roots as well as folk singer, Jonah has always stood somewhat outside
the fray. Taking on projects with an eccentric-yet-entrepreneurial bent and
existing as a one-man cottage industry, playing packed rock clubs with or
without backing bands, but also not above playing in a fan¦s living room, and
generally messing with offbeat, challenging and daring ideas, both musically and
otherwise. In this way, Jonah Matranga is a true artist. But Jonah¦s brass ring
for And is uncomplicated, (As always, I¦m just trying to write a simple
songwriter record that¦s not about being retro or scene-conscious or anything
other than who I am right now. The record is about impermanence, both sweet and
sad. Watching my daughter grow up has been one side of it, losing some friends
and family to cancer and suicide has been another, and it all comes out in
different ways in the songs.÷ Even in the early stages, the songs take more cues
from, say, Tom Petty and Jackson Browne than anything contemporary, although
Jonah sometimes swims in the seas between Beck and, possibly M. Ward. Matranga
doesn¦t care much if this gets him into trouble with scenesters. He¦s just
trying to create perfect and substantial pop music.

The packaging and release plans for And are set to be an innovative and curious
affair, not to mention a treat. Matranga is working simultaneously with several
indie labels around the world, and the packaging, lyrics, liner notes, and bonus
material will be different in each country. (It¦s the global anti-globalisation
record÷, quips Matranga. (It¦s amazing to be working with all of these great
little labels, keeping it personal while still getting the music out there.

Of course, you can expect Jonah himself to not be too far behind, as it¦s likely
he¦s been through your town within the past few months and is planning to come
through again. The venerable Fuji Rock festival in Japan has invited Jonah to
come play their solar-powered stage at the end of July, and Fall tours of the
UK, Europe and the US are being booked as you read this.

Natasha took the US by storm last year with the
first British chart topping hit by a female in
almost twenty years. Vanity Fair singled her out as
the spearhead of a new Britpop invasion; she became
one of the faces of Gap (alongside Mia Farrow and
Common); she was invited by her hero Prince to jam
with him at a private party; Bono enlisted her for
his (RED) campaign; and her song 'Unwritten' proved
to be the most played song on mainstream American
radio in 2006. She now returns to the charts with
her sophmore album, 'N.B.'.
'N.B.' is very much reflective of Natasha being in a
different place from her debut, proving that affairs
of the heart, although difficult, make for excellent
song-writing material. Each track on the album
explores a varying stage of a relationship story,
and the issues, experiences, and processes that come
with these stages: from the lonely place of never
feeling like you will fit with anyone ('Soulmate'),
through the flirting, dancing stage where you feel
you might ('How Do You Do?'), to the moment at which
the game playing ends and open honesty prevails
('Say It Again'). Never one to mouth empty
platitudes or re-hash well-worn cliches, Natasha's
gift for creating pop music that does not sacrifice
intelligence on the altar of universal appeal
prevails throughout.

Review by Rick Anderson
As of the late 1990s, guitarist and fiddler David Bromberg was in musical semi-retirement,
supplementing his day job (making his living buying and selling American-made violins)
with the odd club gig. But in the 1970s, he had a thriving career as both a bandleader
and a sideman, having played on seminal recordings by Bob Dylan, the Eagles, and
Jerry Jeff Walker, among others. This disc includes two of his early albums: first, the
acoustic and largely solo My Own House, on which he plays a program that ranges from
traditional Scottish and American fiddle tunes through Delta blues and songs by Hoagy
Carmichael and Phil Spector. Talk about Americana. The second album included on this
disc couldn't be more of a contrast: You Should See the Rest of the Band is a live recording
with a large and very definitely electric band. David Bromberg the rock & roll bandleader
is much more inclined toward horn-driven R&B ("Key to the Highway," "Sharon"), although
he does pull out the fiddle for a high-octane romp through a medley of traditional tunes at
the end of the show. His singing, while not bad, isn't really worth mentioning. What stand
out are his wide-ranging tastes, his instrumental chops, and his skill as a bandleader, all
of which combine to make this both a valuable piece of pop music history and a thrilling
listening experience.

Release Notes:

"The Last Holy Writer" is the sixth album by Trembling
Blue Stars, thes econd one released worldwide through
Elefant Records. This album is dark, intimate, melancholic
and cloudy, but every now and then there are rays of
sunshine coming through the clouds, riding sunny melodic
breezes.

Slowdrive and The Cure are still good references for this
music, but they are toolimited to describe the unique
sound of Trembling Blue Stars, a sound that's ready to
mingle melodic, sensitive pop with many electronic sounds,
distortions, noises, static and even field recordings that
envelope the songs with a nostalgic halo. On one song,
percussion is provided by footsteps on dry branches and
shingles, and on another song a recording of dawn on the
Romney Marsh provides the backdrop.

The Rain Parade, Mazzy Star and Galaxie 500 come up here
and there: on this album there's folk, and there's
electronica and 80's influences and avant country and, of
course, there's the best pop music you can hear. There's no
doubt you will fall in love again with Bobby Wratten's
music. They have hit the target again.

"The Last Holy Writer" is the proof that one of the most
influential bands in indie-pop is at its most creative,
daring and inspired, now more concentrated than ever in
writing the most beautiful pop songs you've heard for
ages.

º Studios, New York City, New York; Andora, Capitol and Conway Recording º
º Studios, Los Angeles, California. In his own inimitable fashion, Billy º
º Joel has crafted some of the catchiest pop hits of the '80s and '90s, º
º and most of them--17, to be exact--are on this disc. The jaunty, º
º nostalgic "Keeping the Faith" opens things up, and we cruise right down º
º memory lane with Billy: through the pop-soul of "A Matter of Trust," the º
º brash, rocking "I Go to Extremes" and "All About Soul" (remixed here to º
º good effect). Joel has grown over the course of his long career, and you º
º can trace his maturity as an artist through these later songs. The tone º
º is a bit darker, a bit edgier than on his earlier tunes. This is an º
º artist who has always been about making pop music, but he's also lived º
º and learned: "You gotta get tough/but that ain't enough/it's all about º
º soul." Fans will probably agree, and will enjoy this collection º
º immensely. º

Another acoustic based emo band fronted by a 19 year
old guy with girl problems? I'll admit that I was more
than worried myself when recommended this band by a
slew of 16 year old girls whose definition of enjoyable
music requires a heartthrob frontman. However, after
giving The Spill Canvas' debut album Sunsets and Car
Crashes numerous listens, I found myself peculiarly
drawn into the band and their music.
Unlike most bands whose lyrics cater to the 14 year
old, yet somehow heartbroken audience, The Spill Canvas
manages to actually craft very clever and compelling
songs. Their lyrics are very adolescent and obviously I
am not a part of the target audience, but the music
itself is very creative and fascinating. On their
latest release One Fell Swoop the band takes the same
essential experience of the debut album, and polishes
the finish, producing a stellar disc. Easily one of the
best releases of 2005 thus far.

If you listened to Sunsets and Car Crashes and found
yourself deeply in love with a few key tracks, namely
"All Hail The Heartbreaker", "The Tide" and
"Caterpillars", and let down by the majority of the
rest, you will adore One Fell Swoop. The band has
developed from a side project into an emphatic entity
all of its own, and while the lyrics may not have
matured with the musicianship, the writing and
production far exceeds the band's debut .

Most emotional music tends to be hastily written off by
most "music lovers" due to cliched themes and
instrumentation, revisiting the same lyrics and music
in order to sell a few more records at the mall to a
few more teenage girls. While The Spill Canvas may fall
short on lyrical content ("you make it warm when it's
cold outside, not even hell could be hotter than you
right now") the overall feel of the music is so
inherently compelling that you can't help but enjoy it.
This is pop music for people who don't generally buy
into most pop music, while this review may be causing
me appear as though I've lost my mind, you really need
to hear this album to understand the incommunicable
ingredient of the music that will draw you in
immediately.

Now that I've accidentally pushed all of you hardcore
indie scenesters and elitists away from this album with
my promises of melody and laughable lyrical content,
its time to attempt to draw you back in. The first
track on the disc titled "Lust a Prima Vista" opens
with a jumping pop guitar melody that catches you off
guard with an oddly placed 6/4 bar before dropping into
the bass driven verses. The song manages to keep your
attention with its minute and quirky details
intertwined with standard fare radio pop facets.

Sadly a lot of people will tear into this album, based
purely on the fact that the music is often compared to
the likes of Dashboard Confessional, or The Early
November, but anyone with an open mind will find
something enjoyable on this disc.
